Our family escaped completely unscathed, but much of Christchurch and surrounding areas was not so lucky.

Up to 20% of the homes in the city may be rendered uninhabitable. Damage is at least $2 billion in a city of 340,000 people.

The University is closed, as will be many schools.

Aftershocks are continuing, with one of 6.0 on the Richter Scale expected anytime.

The original quake was 7.1

We're also expecting gale force winds later today. Sheeeeeesh.

Most of Christchurch looks normal, but some suburbs are flooded and the roads almost impassable. Hundreds of homes have been condemned and many central city businesses are closed.

Many personal landmarks were affected by the quake. A swingbridge I used to cross as a kid in Kaiapoi was wrecked, a place I used to work at in Merivale was demolished.

I used to visit friends in the flat to the right above.



I used to live in this bedroom back in the '80s.












Amazingly, no one was killed.

The damage is huge, but people love this town and we'll be back up and running pretty quickly.

There is a lot of pride in this city. We won't stay down for long.

A quick note to all our well wishers. We got a huge fright at 4.30 this morning. NZ gets plenty of earthquakes, but this was the worst I’ve ever experienced. As I type this, another aftershock is shaking the house.

We rushed out of bed, grabbed the kids and stood under door jambs. It went on forever.

No damage to our house, other than a couple of broken ornaments. Major damage in parts of Christchurch. The quake was centered 20 miles west of where I sit now.

Buildings are down, pipes ruptured, bridges twisted, roads cracked and flooded. My parents house a little north of here lost a chimney.

Miraculously no reported fatalities so far, but several reported injuries, some serious.

Power has just come back on, as has internet, could be major problems with water in Christchurch as so many pipes are wrecked. Parts of the town are already boiling water.

Airport is closed-flying to US tomorrow, so hopefully it will be open soon.

Big Rugby League game tonight on TV, so glad power is back on. LOL.

Hi all - just a quick note to say that a 7.1 Earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand at 4:35am this morning. Power and water is out through much of the city. My family and I are safe. Here is a news story on the quake.

Soros/Obama/Democrat Connected "Veterans Group" Backs "Ground Zero Mosque"

A high powered and well connected "veterans group" has issued a letter backing "Park 51", the Islamic community center and mosque proposed for Lower Manhattan - the popularly known "Ground Zero Mosque".


According to Joel Wendland, himself an army veteran and editor of the Communist Party USA newsite Peoples World, the organization VoteVets.org, believes that the proposed mosque should be supported on Constitutional grounds and will serve to enhance U.S. national security in the long term.

According to an August 26 Wendland article in the World ;

Authored by VoteVets.org, an organization that advocates for veterans' issues and supports veterans for elected office, the letter urged the Park51 organizers not to abandon the project.

In addition the letter asked the group to circulate the letter to any interested party, "so they know that veterans like us see this as an important issue of our very Constitution and our national security."

The veterans cited their sworn oath as members of the military "to uphold the Constitution" as a basic reason for their support for the project.

The letter noted the hypocrisy of the opponents of the project:

"For all the talk these days from some quarters about the importance of protecting the Constitution and allowing the free market to work unfettered, those same people are fighting against your community's right to buy property and worship freely. Our duty to protect the Constitution didn't end when our service did. It's up to us to stand up for the right for all Americans to enjoy the Constitutional freedoms that so many around the world don't have. So, we are standing up for you."

Protection of the rights of all Americans to practice their faith in the manner of their choosing would also "deal a blow to the propaganda of al Qaeda and Islamist extremists, who recruit on the talking point that the United States is in a war against Islam."

Finally, the letter noted that taking a stand on behalf of the Constitution promotes the safety of U.S. military forces abroad.

"As veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan," it concluded, "we believe the construction of your community center isn't 'anti-America' at all. In fact, building your community center is about as pro-America as one can get."

Who are these patriots, taking such a noble stand for the U.S. Constitution and the safety and security of America's troops and citizenry?


While professing to be a non partisan group, it appears that almost all of VoteVets.org's supported candidates are Democrats. The group's Political Action Committee is charged with seeking to elect Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans to public office – "regardless of party".

However, between 2006 and 2010 VoteVets.org gave $228,700 to Democratic Party candidates and only $15,100 to Republican candidates.

Also, many VoteVets.org personnel have ties to the Obama Administration, the Democratic Party, the Democrat aligned and the George Soros funded Center for American Progress and in one case, directly to the Soros Open Society Institute.

Obama Administration connections include;

• Kayla Williams of the Senior Advisory Board of VoteVets.org, and writer for VetVoice (VoteVet.org's online newsletter) works for Obama appointee, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric K. Shinseki
• Jim Mowrer of the Senior Advisory Board of VoteVets.org served as the State Veterans Director for Senator Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. He is currently an assistant organizer of the Iowa Democratic Veterans Caucus

Democrat connected personnel include;

• Alex Cornell du Houx of the Senior Advisory Board of VoteVets.org serves as the National Council Chair for the College Democrats of America and was formally the co-president of the Maine College Democrats
• David F. Everett of the Senior Advisory Board of VoteVets.org works for Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who is supported by Council for a Livable World and SEIU.
  
• Joe Kramer of the Senior Advisory Board of VoteVets.org has worked for Democrat Jim Ferlo, State Rep for PA

Open Society Institute connected personnel include;

• Matthew Alexander (pseudonym) writes for VoteVets.org online project VetVoice. He is a former senior military interrogator. He led an interrogation team in Iraq that located Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, the former Al Qaida leader, who was killed in a subsequent airstrike. He has conducted more than 300 interrogations and supervised more than 1,000. Alexander has served for 17 years in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves. Alexander is a fellow at the Open Society Institute.

At least four members of VoteVets.org's Board of Advisors are also involved with the Center for American Progress;

• General Wesley K. Clark (ret.) is an author of the books Winning Modern Wars and Waging Modern War, published by PublicAffairs Books, which has also published authors such as George Soros. Wesley Clark has served as a Trustee of the Center for American Progress and was a 2008 Democratic party presidential hopeful.
• Elaine C. Kamarck is a Lecturer in Public Policy, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School, Harvard University. In the 1980s, Kamarck was one of the founders of the New Democrat movement that helped elect Bill Clinton president. She served in the White House from 1993 to 1997, where she created and managed the Clinton Administration's National Performance Review, also known as reinventing government. In 1979 she was involved with Democratic Agenda, an attempt by socialist leader Michael Harrington (founder of Democratic Socialists of America) to move the Democratic Party to the left. Lamarck serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for American Progress.
• Bob Kerrey, a former Democratic Party Senator from Nebraska and a Trustee of the Center for American Progress
• Lawrence J. Korb, a Fellow of the Center for American Progress

The "Ground Zero Mosque" issue has divided America. Pro mosque "progressives" are on the defensive against a huge groundswell of public opinion against the project.

Is the the call by VoteVets.org, for Park51 to go ahead a genuine attempt to shed light the issue, by calling for tolerance and extending an olive branch to moderate Islam?

Or is it a cynical ploy by the Obama Administration and its allies, to take some heat out of the issue, by using "veterans" as cover for what is essentially a "progressive" agenda?

Americans rightly respect their veterans and tend to listen to their opinions. Would the public be happy to know that VoteVets.org was connected to both President Barack Obama and the not so popular George Soros?

Do they really want to be on the same side as the Communist Party USA on this issue?

The former servicemen and women of VoteVets.org are genuine veterans, but are their paymasters genuine patriots?

Should VoteVets.org's opinions on this issue be respected? Or should Americans view them as little but cynical propaganda from quarters who have previously shown little regard for the U.S. Constitution, national security, or the well-being of American troops in the field?

How Darwinism will create a conservative dynasty in America

For a glimpse of a nation's future, said Phillip Longman in Foreign Policy, pay a visit to Seattle and Salt Lake City. Seattle, a city of highly educated progressives, " has 45 percent more dogs than children." Traditional Salt Lake has “19 percent more kids than dogs." It's a striking pattern, found throughout the U.S. and Europe — and it will have profound implications for what kind of societies we'll leave for our ancestors. Fertility is now highly correlated to political and religious beliefs. The more progressive and secular you are, the less likely you arc to have a big family; the more conservative and religious you are, the larger your family is likely to be. In religious Utah, for example, the birth rate is 92 children for every 1,000 women, the highest in the nation. By contrast, highly progressive Vermont — the first state to embrace gay unions — has the country's lowest fertility rate, just 51 children per 1,000 women. "Among states that voted for President Bush in 2004, the average fertility rate is 12 percent higher than the rate of states for Sen. John Kerry." Almost 20 percent of American women who came of age in the countercultural 1960s and '70s arc approaching the end of their fertility cycles without reproducing, meaning that millions of progressive feminists are bequeathing "no generational legacy." Whether you like the implications of these numbers are not, the trend is clear: We're headed for "a far more conservative future, one in which patriarchy and other traditional values make a comeback, if only by default."

40 Years of the Mexican-American Revolution

The Chicano Moratorium brought together 30,000 people - mainly from the Mexican American communities in the Los Angeles area - to protest the Vietnam War and "racism towards people of Mexican heritage".

In many ways this was the birth of the modern Chicano rights movement, now so prominent in the the illegal immigration debate.

The movement was guided by Communist Party USA members like Bert Corona and Alinsky inspired socialist sympathizers like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.

The following is an interview of Chicano Moratorium leader Rosalio Munoz about the significance of the Aug. 29, 1970 protest, then and now. Munoz is now chair of the Communist Party's Mexican-American Equality Commission, the Party body charged with organizing Latino protest movements, voter registration drives and delivering the Mexican-American vote to the Democratic party.

I.F. Stone – One Time Soviet Agent Endorsed Bernie Sanders

My previous post looked at Vermont's independent Senator Bernie Sanders and his links to senior Communist Party USA member Mike Bayer.


I speculated that Bayer may be both a communist spy and agent-of-influence inside Sanders' Vermont Progressive Party.

It turns out that Bayer is not the first possible communist agent to back Bernie Sanders.

During his unsuccessful 1988 run for U.S. Congress, then Burlington, Vermont mayor Sanders received the endorsement of I. F. Stone, an iconic leftist journalist, alleged communist sympathizer, Soviet spy and possible agent-of- influence.

Here is a letter that Stone mailed out on behalf of the Sanders campaign in October 1988, only a few months before his death.

I've been politically active all my life. I was a member of the Executive Committee of the Socialist Party in New Jersey, before I was old enough to vote.

Now I'd like to ask you to join me in a historic step forward in American politics. My favorite Mayor -- Bernie Sanders of Burlington, Vermont -- is running for Congress, and with our help he can win an unprecedented victory for us all.

Bernie is a unique figure in our political system. He's an unapologetic socialist who has been elected Mayor of Vermont's largest city four times. He has proved that a socialist, running as an Independent against the combined opposition of Republicans and Democrats, can be successful by speaking out for working people, the elderly and the poor.

Bernie has been a leader in the struggle for peace and justice . His activism was instrumental in Vermont's strong support of the Nuclear Freeze in its town meetings in 1982. He has traveled to Nicaragua to speak out against the Reagan Administration's war, and to establish a Sister City relation between Burlington and Puerto Cabezas. More recently, he went to the Soviet Union to set up a Sister City program with Yaroslavl...

Having Bernie in Washington will widen out the limits of political discussion. He'll speak up loudly, as he has in Vermont, for real alternatives. He'll show that we need a pragmatic socialism to deal with the grave problems of our economic system.

Sanders went on to enter Congress in 1990, where he went on to found the now more than 80 strong Congressional Progressive Caucus, a body with ties to Democratic Socialists of America, the Communist Party USA and the far left Washington DC based "think tank" Institute for Policy Studies.

What is the evidence that I. F. Stone, was a communist sympathizer or a Soviet agent?


As a young journalist in the 1930s, Stone was was a presence in the Popular Front, an effort by the Communist Party to make common cause with other left-wing groups. Although Stone had briefly been a member of the Socialist Party USA in the early 1930s, he soon "had a reputation as a fervent pro-Communist".

Stone also signed a statement, published just days before the Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939, defending the Soviet Union and its "progress toward democracy" and denying it shared any commonalities with Nazi Germany.

In 1940 Stone moved to PM, the leftist New York daily. There, he became a member of the paper’s pro-communist faction. Another PM staffer was Myril Bennett, later the mother of David Axelrod, now a key adviser to President Barack Obama.

A few years after PM folded in 1948, Stone created his own highly influential newsletter, I. F. Stone’s Weekly, which gained a wide audience, especially on the left.

Stone's slavish support of Soviet and communist policies continued until the Stalin era came to an end in 1953. In 1952, Stone had written "The Hidden History of the Korean War", which promoted the Soviet propaganda theme that South Korea had sparked the war by invading the communist North

The first report of Stone’s possible ties to came Soviet intelligence in 1992, when Oleg Kalugin, a retired KGB general, told a British journalist, “We had an agent—a well-known American journalist—with a good reputation, who severed his ties with us after 1956. I myself convinced him to resume them. But in 1968, after the invasion of Czechoslovakia . . . he said he would never again take any money from us".

When KGB cables deciphered by the Venona Project in the mid-1990s, were made public, some were found to mention Stone.

On September 13 ,1944, the KGB New York station had sent a message to Moscow that Vladimir Pravdin, a KGB officer working under cover as a correspondent for TASS, the Soviet news agency, had been trying to contact “Pancake” in Washington, but that Pancake had been refusing to meet, citing a busy schedule. Samuel Krafsur, an American KGB agent code-named “Ide” who worked for TASS in the building that housed Stone’s office, had tried to “sound him out but Pancake did not react.” An October 23 message then reported that Pravdin had succeeded in meeting with Stone:

P. [Pancake/Stone] said that he had noticed our attempts to contact him, particularly the attempts of Ide [Krafsur] and of people of the Trust [USSR Embassy], but he had reacted negatively fearing the consequences. At the same time he implied that the attempts at rapprochement had been made with insufficient caution and by people who were insufficiently responsible. To Sergey’s [Pravdin’s] reply that naturally we did not want to subject him to unpleasant complications, Pancake gave him to understand that he was not refusing his aid but one should consider that he had three children and did not want to attract the attention of the Hut [FBI]. To Sergey’s question how he considered it advisable to maintain liaison P. replied that he would be glad to meet but he rarely visited Tyre [New York].

While Stone earned a good living, the message added, “he would not be averse to having a supplementary income".

A KGB New York station report of May 1936 stated : “Relations with Pancake have entered the channel of normal operational work. He went to Washington on assignment for his newspaper. Connections in the State Dep. and Congress.” By stating that its relationship with Stone had entered “the channel of normal operational work,” the KGB New York station was reporting that Stone had become a fully active agent.

Stone assisted Soviet intelligence on a number of tasks: talent spotting, acting as a courier by relaying information to other agents, and providing gossip and harder data to the KGB.

Stone's name also appeared in a 1944 KGB report on Victor Perlo (cover name “Raid”), head of a network of Soviet sources in Washington during World War II. “In 1942–43,” the report said, “R. [Raid/Perlo] secretly helped Pancake compile materials for various exposés by the latter.” This indicates that Stone was being used by Soviet intelligence as an agent-of-influence as well as a spy.

A 1945 report about Stanley Graze, a secret communist and a Soviet source, noted that in 1943 Graze’s wife had been “Pancake’s personal secretary, maintaining ties with the latter’s informants in government agencies.

The Soviets knew little about Harry Truman when he succeeded to the presidency, on the death of Franklin Roosevelt. In June 1945 Moscow Center told Pravdin, then chief of the New York KGB station:

Right now the cultivation of Truman’s inner circle becomes exceptionally important. This is one of the Station’s main tasks. To fulfill this task, the following agent capabilities need to be put to the most effective use: 1. In journalistic circles—Ide, Grin, Pancake . . . Bumblebee. Through these people focus on covering the principal newspaper syndicates and the financial-political groups that are behind them; their relationships with Truman, the pressure exerted on him, etc.

No evidence has yet surfaced to prove that Stone aided the Soviets after this period.

He did later work with the Washington DC based Institute for Policy Studies which was described by British intelligence expert Brian Crozier as the "perfect intellectual front for Soviet activities which would be resisted if they were to originate openly from the KGB."

Stone certainly stayed in sympathy with the Communist Party well into the 1960s;.

As of May 1964, "I. F. Stone , writer-editor", was listed as a sponsor of the Communist Party USA front, National Committee to Abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee.

This organization was the driving force behind the destruction of U.S. Senate and Congressional Committees charged with rooting out communist and radical subversion in the U.S.

By the mid 1970s, these bodies had all been closed down due to combined pressure from the National Committee to Abolish the House Un-American Activities Committee and leftist Senators and Congressmen.

Had I. F. Stone's comrades not succeeded in shutting down America's counter subversion committees, Bernie Sanders may have ended up in front of a Senate Sub-committee, rather than serving on one.

Mike Bayer – Communist Agent in the Bernie Sanders Camp?

Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders may have a Communist Party USA agent in his camp.

The person in question is Mike Bayer, who is currently serving as Treasurer of Bernie Sanders' Vermont Progressive Party.

The Senator from Vermont, is a self proclaimed socialist and proud of it.


As a student in Chicago, Sanders was active in the Young Peoples Socialist League and has a decades old relationship with America's largest marxist organization, Democratic Socialists of America.

It was in conjunction with D.S.A. that Sanders formed, in 1991, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, now a more than eighty strong alliance of far left Senators and Congressmen.

Mike Bayer's closeness to Senator Sanders, however I takes things to a new level. While Bayer is no longer the open communist he once was, there is evidence that he is acting as a spy on Sanders' Party and may be be some kind of liaison man or agent-of-influence for the Communist Party.

Bayer has lived in Vermont since 1996, working as Chief Financial Officer of Vermont Legal Aid. He has been a leader in the leftist Vermont Progressive Party, since its earliest days.

Currently Bayer is running for the position of State Auditor of Accounts for Vermont, on the Progressive Party ticket. The position is currently held by Republican, Thomas M. Salmon.

Before moving to Vermont, Bayer was for many years, Indiana District organizer of the Communist Party USA and a regular contributor to the Party paper Peoples Daily World/ Peoples Weekly World.


Since working with Sanders' Progressive Party, Bayer has downplayed his communism, but did attend the 2001, Communist Party USA 27th National Convention in Milwaukee.

He is almost certainly still a Party member today. Certainly the Party hasn't forgotten Mike Bayer, or the regular updates he provides them on Progressive Party affairs.

While the Communist Party works mainly through the Democratic Party, in a few states they will work with influential third parties, which have a real prospect of electoral success. New York's Working Families Party and the Vermont Progressive Party being the best examples.

According to a Communist Party USA report on the 2002 elections;

A more advanced aspect of political independence is pro-worker electoral formations outside the Democratic Party. A growing example is the Working Families Party, which has established itself in New York, doubled its vote in two years time, and is now expanding into Connecticut and other states. Election law in Connecticut does not allow petitioning candidates to run on more than one line, so the tactic is to run as many as 60 candidates for State Representative around the state with the goal of getting at least one percent of the vote and winning minor party status in those districts. Then in the next election, the Working Families Party can cross-endorse candidates in other Parties who adopt the Working Families program. Western Connecticut Labor Council president Blair Bertaccini will be one of those candidates.

In Vermont, going beyond Bernie Sanders, is the new Vermont Progressive Party, which received 10% of the vote for governor and won 4 representatives in the last election. Mike Bayer sits on their state committee.

Blair Bertaccini, incidentally, is a long time Communist Party USA member, who has been less vocal about his Marxism-Leninism, since becoming active in the W.F.P.

From a report to the National Committee of the Communist Party USA November 16, 2002;

The Progressive Party in Vermont ran Anthony Polina for Lieutenant Governor. He got 25% of the vote, up from 9.5% two years ago. He campaigned for a tax surcharge on the wealthy, replacing property taxes with broad-based taxes to fund public education, and a single payer health care system. He was endorsed by the Vermont AFL-CIO. The campaign was a collaborative effort with Bernie Sanders and inspired a high voter turnout. Mike Bayer reports that the lack of program by the Democratic candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor led to their defeat.

Note that Mike Bayer is reporting on V.P.P. affairs back to the highest body of the Communist Party USA.

On December 3 2006, People’s Weekly World readers celebrating the results of the Nov. 7 elections, with banquets and dinners in various places across the country.

In Connecticut, guests packed the New Haven People's Center to “Carry the People’s Election Victories Forward”...

Michael Bayer, treasurer of the Vermont Progressive Party, spoke about left Independent Bernie Sanders’ election to the U.S. Senate as a fighter for working-class people. Bayer also stressed the continuing need to pressure Congress for universal health care, minimum wage increases, the right to belong to a union and the return of U.S. troops home from Iraq.

The event was described this way, in an earlier edition of Peoples Weekly World:

Special guest Michael Bayer, state treasurer of Vermont’s Progressive Party, will address “Building Independent Political Action on behalf of Working Families.” The Progressive Party was inspired by Congressman Bernie Sanders, who is a founder of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is newly elected U.S. Senator from Vermont.

The event will celebrate a year of activism against the war in Iraq and for immigrant rights and workers’ rights, reflected in major get out the vote efforts by labor and community groups which changed control of Congress. Projections will be made for next steps to change the direction of the country and achieve an end to the war, good jobs and health care.

The program, to be held at the New Haven People’s Center, 37 Howe Street, will include poetry, music, an international holiday gift table and a home-cooked light supper. The annual reception is hosted by the People’s Weekly World in Connecticut on the occasion of the 87th anniversary of the Communist Party USA.

Clearly Mike Bayer is interested in more than reporting on Bernie Sanders' people to the Communist Party. Bayer is interested in policy.

"universal health care, minimum wage increases, the right to belong to a union and the return of U.S. troops home from Iraq."

This is all Communist Party policy. It is also largely V.P.P. policy. Is Mike Bayer's main responsibility inside the V.P.P. to ensure that the "Communist Party line" is adhered to?

Is it also to make sure that Bernie Sanders also pushes the appropriate "line" in the U.S. Senate and through the Congressional Progressive Caucus?

This is a key point. Modern American communism, is not about atom bomb spies, terrorists or bomb throwers. It is about achieving "social change" by getting the Democrats to adopt communist policies and selling them as their own to the American voter.

Revolution, by stealth, using the Democrats, Working Families Party and Vermont Progressive Party to promote communist programs, is the modern face of U.S. Marxism-Leninism.

Mike Bayer is ideally placed to assist with this process.

Does Bernie Sanders realize that he is working closely with a probable agent of the Communist Party USA? Its very hard to believe he doesn't.

In November 1989 Sanders addressed the 10th national conference of the Communist Party front U.S. Peace Council - "End The Cold War Fund Human Needs" - in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1997, Sanders co-sponsored H.R. 950, the Job Creation and Infrastructure Restoration Act. This Bill was introduced at the request of the National Labor Coalition for Public Works Jobs - which was led by members, or supporters of the Communist Party USA.

The Communist Party USA has strong ties to China, Cuba and other hostile powers. Is it of concern that a long time senior cadre of that Party is working in close proximity to a serving U.S. Senator?

Even in Ohio – Communists Back Dem Congressional Candidate Bill O’Neill

While standing little chance against a Republican incumbent, Ohio lawyer, labor organizer and now nurse, Bill O'Neill, is standing for Congress on the Democrat ticket in Ohio's 14th Congressional District.


O'Neill is backed by a coalition which includes prominent members of the Ohio Communist Party.

In the largely rural District, Democrats and local Communist Party USA members have united to promote Democratic candidates in the November mid term elections.

Leading Communist Party members like Wally Kaufman and Diana Sowry have formed an alliance with local labor unions and the Democrats to try and stem and reverse the coming Republican/Tea Party tide come November.

They are backing Congressional hopeful Bill O'Neill as well as State Treasurer candidate Kevin Boyce, Senate candidate Lee Fisher and gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland.

Labor, civil rights, family farm and community allies rallied here Aug. 21 to kick off the campaign to elect Democrats in November.

The occasion was the opening of the county Democratic headquarters, but the event had been initiated by a grassroots progressive coalition.

Wally Kaufman, vice president of the AFL-CIO Retirees Council, said he and activists from the NAACP, the Farmers Union and other groups had planned a picnic to mobilize for the elections, but at the request of the Democrats, agreed to combine the event with the opening of the party's headquarters.

"We plan to set up an Ashtabula Progressive Forum to hear speakers and discuss issues, especially in relation to the elections," he said.

Kim Parker, president of the Democratic Women's Caucus welcomed about 50 people in attendance to the brightly lit storefront stressing the critical battle shaping up. George Williams, president of the NAACP, also gave words of greetings and an invocation.

Ray Gruber, president of the Ashtabula AFL-CIO, said labor was already making 20,000 calls a week, on behalf of its endorsed candidates, out of phone banks throughout the state.

He said the race for the U.S. Senate seat left open by the retirement of Republican Senator George Voinovich was critical. There could not be a clearer choice, he said, than between Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, the Democrat, and Rob Portman, the Republican, who served as trade representative and budget director under President George W. Bush.

Diana Sowry, secretary of the AFL-CIO, warned about the intense anger felt by many young people in the community.

"They feel they have no future. We need to hit the streets and fight back against the dark force," she said, referring to the Republicans. She urged people to take part in the national march on Washington for jobs, peace, education and justice set for Oct. 2.

Bill O'Neill, Democratic candidate for Congress, said there is deep-seated anger about the bailout of the banks and the unfunded wars.

He called for efforts to stop the continuing loss of jobs by ending tax breaks for corporations that go overseas and insisting that wind turbines and other equipment in new green energy industries be manufactured in the United States...

Kevin Boyce, candidate for state Treasurer, stressed the importance of re-electing Gov. Ted Strickland and the Democratic slate of statewide candidates.

Strickland, he said, a "people's candidate, you can trust." His opponent, John Kasich, however, was an executive with Lehman Brothers, the giant Wall St. bank that collapsed last September. Kasich is calling for privatizing the state's department of economic development, which would end transparency and open the door to corruption.

Ashtabula County, is not generally regarded as an hotbed of communism, but even in rural Ohio, as in many regions across America, the lines between the Democratic Party, organized labor and the Communist Party are now almost non-existent.
